Why Us

British made doormats

When we launched Ocean Mats in 2021 alongside our established Cotswoldrope  handmade rope baskets and outdoor mat business, we did so after identifying a need for a British made eco friendly, sustainable recycled doormat product that doesn't require tumble drying, is long-lasting and can be washed at 30 degrees. Many mats are of course available from a variety of sources. Very few are made in the UK though. With Turtle Mat now manufacturing outside the United Kingdom, even fewer since 2024! Our recycled, washable doormats mats are made by the UK's leading doormat manufacturer. Other sellers who will import recycled product but we believe in keeping everything we do within the UK. Whilst some have downgraded their products making them thinner and less vibrant, we have done the opposite. Or backings are now thicker than ever.

Cotton, even recycled cotton, is not used as this uses bleaches and gallons of water to make it a viable product. Around 20,000 litres of water is required to produce a single cotton T-shirt!  Society and the industry is moving away such unsustainable materials.

We have recently added an exciting range of coir and latex based mats. these mats are all inspired by the RHS lindley library of images. Working as the licenced partner for RHS mats, rugs and floor coverings we have designed a lovely range using vibrabt colours and designs. The mats are made from naturally sourced coir and a natural latex backing which fits with our sustainable and environmentally conscious ethos.

As part of the Royal Hortiultural Society licence and in conjunction with their licencing managers we also developed a range of recycled sustainable washable indoor doormats. Again drawing inspiration from the RHS Lindley library these designs can be seen in our online shop and also in the RHS retail outlets.

UK owned and based. We do not answer to overseas owners or investors. We aim to be one of the very best employers to work for and we operate a strict 'family first' policy. For instance; we pay our staff for five days a week but only ask them to work four and a half. Friday lunchtime is time to go home and enjoy some family time.  Plus, we give our employee's a day off on their birthday.

Our staff are highly valued and respected. They are listened to and consulted. After all, they are one of the company's most valued assets.

Our Story

copper Leaves

Above is our hugely successfull copper leaves mats. This was the very first mat Susan designed and has gone on to sell in vast numbers. We do occasionally consult with reputable and well regarded designers to ensure we keep upto date with current trends and moods.

If you have an image or a pattern you particularly like then do please send it through for us to look at. If it fits into our ethos then we may well include it in our future design pathway. As long as the image is not copyrighted or used elsewhere, we will pay you a consultancy fee if we use it.
