Our doormat story
Hello and welcome to the Atlantic Mats story. Atlantic Mats was founded in 2021 with the sole aim of developing sustainable, high-quality, UK made durable doormats. Our story is here;
I have worked in the textile industry for over 30 years, after gaining an HND in Fashion Design. Starting out my career in the fashion industry with Courtaulds then moving into interiors, specifically, floor coverings. I joined James Turtle at The Turtle Mat Company in 2002 after gaining a masters degree in Design Studies. I worked on various projects including designing and launching their range of Cotton Turtle mat design mat. These went on to great success building the company into a multi million pound concern. Following the sale of Turtle Mat to a large American corporate I moved on and have now become part of the very dynamic Atlantic Mats.
Having been the architect of James Turtles venture into doormats I am uniquely placed to speak about mats and how they can help to keep your floor clean and dry.
All too often, a doormat is regarded as disposable, when they get dirty we tend to discard them. We wanted to find a solution that was kind to the environment, long-lasting, sustainable and decorative. We believe we have achieved that.
In our pursuit to reduce waste and protect our limited resources, we developed Ocean Mats, a range of hard-wearing, washable doormats. We steered away from cotton given its very poor environmental credentials.
The Ocean Mat doormat range is made in the UK's leading eco friendly manufacturing plant. The very same plant that Turtle Mat used to use before they moved production to Poland. Made from recycled materials diverted from landfill. The dirt-trapping pile is 100% recycled and the anti-slip backing also contains recycled content. The mats are washable and can be used again and again. They also dry quickly, so there’s need to use additional resources to dry them.
We are passionate about preserving our marine environment and have teamed up with Healthy Seas. We donate a percentage of the sales from every Ocean Mat doormat to support the work they do in rescuing ghost fishing nets and plastics found in our seas. Cotswold Rope doormats are made here in the UK from a recyclable rope that looks and feels like hemp rope. Each mat is handmade, celebrating the craft of weaving. These long-lasting doormats are designed for outdoor use and are stylish as well as functional. They are great teamed with Ocean Mats and together offer the very best in trapping dirt at the door.
In 2023 we were awarded the prestigious Royal Horticultural Licence. Using their exclusive range of designs within the Lindley library collections. Working with the RHS we have launched a range of RHS inspired designs to complement our existing range.
Our range of coir mats - 'Cotswold Coir' are designed in the Cotswolds and hand-printed in India.
If you look around at all the mats and rug sellers you will find quite literally dozens and dozens of them. Very very few actually make the mats themselves. Even fewer make the mats from sustainable materials. Even fewer than that make them here in the Uk. We design, make and use sustainable materials for all our Oceanmats, here in the UK.
