Jali screen

Detail from a Jali screen or jaali (jālī, meaning "net") is the term used to describe perforated or latticed material, usually stone, with an ornamental pattern of calligraphy, geometry or natural motifs. Often found in architectural decoration, This design is common in Indo-Islamic and Indian architecture. The Ashmolean's Mughal screens feature central panels with interlocking geometric patterns, possibly made for one of the nineteenth century exhibitions of Indian art.
