Best doormat

There are so many different types of mats on the market it can be hard to know what mat is the best doormat to buy and what works best at various entrances. Here’s your ultimate doormat guide!

1.     Outside – Coir (made from coconut fibre) are a great choice but can weather quickly. They tend to be fine for fine days but can get waterlogged. Ideally keep them for the summer months or put in a covered porch area. The best for long term outdoor dirt-trapping is to invest in a sturdy scrapper style mat that can be hosed down and won’t break-up in bad weather.

2.     Inside the door – A washable, textile top mat made of hard-wearing tufts such as nylon or polyester provides the ideal barrier at your door. Cotton mats are also very functional for their dirt-trapping abilities. Not all mats are equal though, you need something that will stand the test of time and also give you a good anti-slip base. Mats with a ‘gripper’ style back provide the best grip and are also flexible enough for frequent washing.

3.     Using mats around the house – A mat isn’t just for the back door! Larger sizes such as runners are great for use around the kitchen, utility rooms and in hallways. Don’t forget too, a washable mat is great for pets, trapping dirt as they come in and perfect for use by their food and drinking area.

4.     Mats or Rugs – When is the best doormat a mat and a rug a rug! It probably just comes down to usage. Historically, early floor coverings were functional items and used for insulation. The earliest known rug was most likely of Armenian origin and from here evolved as weaving and techniques developed.

Rugs in their various forms never seem to be out of fashion. Today with the wide array of modern techniques and materials, they are as popular as ever. Washable rugs are a smart choice and have become favoured for use all around the house.
